"Maybe. But people can be manipulated, which would be how you'd hack that 'system.' So yes, I think there's value in trying to figure this out." Alex shrugged, and nods to Lucifer's answer.

"If nothing else, think of this as my way of not being bored. Which I am. A lot of the time here. Reading constantly gets old after awhile, even if they have interesting stuff in the library."

Lucifer raises his eyebrows. "You think there's value in manipulation?"

Interesting. Very interesting indeed. He's not worried, not about the commissary. Whatever "system" is used to pass out tickets, he doubts even Alex will be able to figure it out. And even if he can, the tickets are pretty low stakes. Nothing coming out of that glorified vending machine has been particularly useful or interesting so far. It's just treats. Minor luxuries. Gag gifts.

"You haven't found the porn collection yet?" he asks.

"There can be." Alex said in return; far as he was concerned, he was just stating a fact. "I haven't actually been interested in finding that enough to go looking yet." Concerning the porn collection. Hell, Alex had his own 'porn collection' thanks to all the assimilated memories from people he'd consumed.

The only value in manipulation, in Lucifer's experience, is alienating people who care about you. But that is something Alex will have to discover for himself - being told that won't change his mind.

So he goes for the porn.

"Well, then you can't complain about being bored, can you? Also, there are literally thousands of movies and TV shows, from a lot of different worlds in there. Might need to expand your horizons."

"Yes, but doing nothing but reading, or watching stuff, is boring after a while." Alex pointed out. "I've been exploring the resource library. It and the observatory are the most common places you'll find me usually. I can still be bored." And frustrated by that boredom.

“Time to figure out what else you can do, then,” Lucifer says easily. “Think outside the box. Use your imagination. Consult other people for ideas. Maybe not other inmates, most of them only seem interested in futile escape attempts or…” he coughs. “Foam… spouses.”

"Never thought I might miss actual chores." Alex muttered, but he got the point. It just was...difficult. He brooded and didn't really trust anybody, which didn't help. "Honestly kind of surprised this place doesn't have more things for us to do. It's not solitary, and in creature comforts its plusher than a prison, but it's frustrating here in other ways."

"Have you considered that may be part of the point?" Lucifer offers. "You have a lot of free time on your hands. How do you choose to spend it? What do you do with that time? Do you need someone to set a list for you, or can you figure out things to do for yourself that are useful, productive, maybe even good for others?"

"The things I can think of easily that are productive or might be good for others, the ship already takes care of." Alex pointed out. "It cooks, it takes care of the gardening, it takes care of medicine and medical stuff, there's nothing that really needs repair or to be put together."

Alex did see what Lucifer was saying. While he wouldn't admit it though, he did want SOME guidance.

"Have you considered bringing this up with your warden? She seems easy enough to talk to," Lucifer says - hey, he likes Claire. He thinks she's one of the more reasonable, level-headed wardens here. "Put your heads together, have some discussions."

This specific question, no, but Alex has been pondering bringing it up. It's not as if he and Claire were on bad terms, either. He snorts though, and offers a hint of sarcastic smile. "I'll do that." He'd kind of expected the Warden to do the approaching, but hey--nothing wrong with him asking for clarifications and expectations.
